Packaging is of fundamental importance in providing people all over the world with nutritious, high-quality food and drink products. We are nevertheless aware this must not come at the expense of the environment. The current mainstream packaging system is not sustainable because it still primarily consists of linear raw materials: raw materials are used to make product packaging which is thrown away once the product has been consumed. This model presents huge challenges, especially in relation to plastics.

As a company committed to protecting and promoting the health of the planet and people, we want to play our part in accelerating the transition from a linear to a circular packaging economy.

Our goal is packaging that enables more effective recycling of the materials used. That means eliminating unnecessary packaging. In future, all packaging required should be reusable or recyclable to a greater extent. We also want to ensure the materials used remain part of the circular economy, as far as possible, and never become waste or pollute the environment.

CIRCULAR ECONOMY FOR PACKAGING

To drive the circular economy forward, Danone joined the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s New Plastics Economy Initiative in 2017. In 2018, Danone signed the Global Commitment on Plastics which was established by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation in collaboration with the UN Environment Programme and has since worked on implementing our goals. 

Since 2018, we have made significant progress on changing our packaging.

  • 84% of the packaging used by Danone worldwide is reusable, recyclable or compostable (figure for 2021, compared with 80% in 2018).
  • For plastic packaging, the share stands at 74% (figure for 2021, compared with 65% in 2018).
  • Reduction and reuse:
    • Reusable packaging was used for around 50% of water sold worldwide in 2021.
    • Between 2018 and 2021 Danone cut its plastics consumption by 60,000 tonnes in total and by almost 90,000 tonnes for new plastic, which represents a 12% reduction in new plastic over this period.
  • Overall, we have almost doubled the use of recycled plastics since 2018, reaching 11% in 2021.

Danone pro-actively supports new recycling technologies. In 2022, the company entered into partnership with Loop Industries to improve the recycling of PET bottles in closed cycles and to enable the recycling of packaging and materials that are difficult to reuse. 

Progress towards a circular economy for packaging has been held back by a series of systemic obstacles. They include underdeveloped collection and recycling facilities for yoghurt pots, inadequate infrastructure for reuse and the shortage of recycled materials. Danone is actively working towards overcoming these obstacles. In 2022, we joined the Business Coalition for a Global Plastics Treaty. This new coalition led by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and WWF supports a common vision for an international legally binding instrument to end plastic pollution by making its voice heard in the contractual negotiations to lend weight to calls for an ambitious and effective global contract. We will continue our activities until the completion of the multilateral negotiations on the contract scheduled for mid-2025.

100% rPET WATER BOTTLES

Since mid-August 2020, Volvic has only used recycled PET (rPET)* in the manufacture of PET  returnable deposit bottles. These returnable deposit bottles made of used plastic can also be recycled. This means Volvic contributes to a circular economy of packaging materials and preserves finite resources.

98% of all PET drinks bottles are reused in Germany thanks to the deposit system. 97.4% of returned PET deposit bottles are then recycled. Evidence of this is provided by a study by the ‘Gesellschaft für Verpackungsmarktforschung’ (Society for Packaging Market Research).

WHERE DO THE RECYCLED MATERIALS USED FOR THE BOTTLES COME FROM?

The recycled material here is rPET, which is the abbreviation for recycled PET. This is not PET newly made using crude oil, a finite resource, but instead PET that has already been used for packaging and prepared for re-use through a recycling process.

By using recycled PET in our product packaging, we’re supporting the circular economy and ensuring that we use as little newly made PET as possible. All of our Volvic PET returnable-deposit bottles in Germany and Switzerland have been made of 100% recycled PET since 2020.* The Evian range in Switzerland is already made of 100% recycled PET.

*Excluding lids and labels. However, we’re working on those too.

ARE OUR VOLVIC BOTTLES BIO-DEGRADABLE?

No, our Volvic bottles are not bio-degradable*.

*However, they are 100% recyclable.

CAN WE AVOID PLASTIC WASTE BY USING RECYCLED PET?

By using recycled PET, we can avoid plastic waste as existing plastics are reprocessed in the recycling process and used in our PET returnable-deposit bottles.

CAN WE IMPROVE THE CO2 FOOTPRINT OF VOLVIC WITH MORE rPET?

We’ve calculated the CO2 footprint for rPET internally. These calculations indicate recycled PET has a better CO2 footprint than newly produced PET. It is nevertheless important that we reduce our use of crude oil, a finite resource, by using recycled PET but also by using recycled PET materials that have already been used. We’ve set ourselves the goal of continuing to cut our CO2 emissions through various measures while also offsetting the remaining CO2 emissions.
